Constructing Religious Otherness in Russia

Russia, a vast continental state, has been the crossroads for many religious groups: Christians, Jews, Muslims, "Pagans", Buddhists and others. This workshop endeavors to take a snapshot view of typologies of religious encounter in Russia, examining multiple types of "othering".
How has Orthodoxy influenced the other religions of the Russian Empire? Has Orthodoxy been influenced? What did communist rule do to alter daily Muslim practice? The time-period to be covered would be from the Kievan Rus to the contemporary age, scholars united by their work on religious pluralism. The longue durée allows us to see changes over time, and how earlier practices have come to influence modern praxis.
