Ya-pei Kuo studied history at the National Taiwan University in Taipei and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. From 2003 to 2008 she worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Tufts University (Medford/ Sommerville, USA), while she was also holding a visiting research fellowship from 2006 to 2007 at Modern East Asian Research Center, based at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. Before joining the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, Ya-pei Kuo hold a fellowship at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden, where she also worked as a lecturer until last year.

Ya-pei Kuo fields of interest include the relationship of Christianity and the Confucian church in modern China as well as the history of religion in China in the 19th and 20th century. Among many articles, her monograph Debating “Culture” in Interwar China will be published soon.

During her fellowship with us she will explore missionary encounter and the conception of modern religion in the late 19thcentury in China.
