Vasilios Makrides has been Full Professor for Religious Studies focussing on Orthodox Christianity at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Erfurt since 1999. Prior to his professorship he studied at Athens, Harvard and Tübingen (Dr. phil.), held a fellowship at the Institut für Europäische Geschichte (Mainz) in 1995 and was lecturer for Religious Studies and Religious Education at the University of Thessaly (Volos, Greece) from 1995-1998. During his time at the University of Erfurt he also worked as a Visiting Professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Section  des Sciences Religieuses) in Paris in 2002. His fields of interests include the cultural history and sociology of Orthodox Christianity as well as the history of religious ideas and mentalities in Greece and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. In addition, he is interested in the religious and cultural relations between the Orthodox East and the Latin West, but also between Greece, the Balkans and Russia.

During his stay in Bochum, he will investigate the Orthodox Christian and Islamic Anti-Westernism from a comparative perspective.
