KHK Visiting Research Fellow 2013, Full Professor of Religious Studies, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Since 2009 Gerard Wiegers is professor of religious studies at the University of Amsterdam. Prior to that, he was professor for comparative religion and Islamic studies at Radboud University Nijmegen (2004-2009), lecturer in the comparative study of religions and Islamic studies at Leiden University (1996-2004), and research fellow with the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (1991-1996). He is member of several editorial boards, including the Numen book series with Brill and the journal Al-Quantara.

His field of expertise are the history of Islam and the relations between Islam and other religions, especially on the Iberian peninsula, north Africa and Europe. He is also interested in theoretical and methodological issues in the study of religions. As visiting research fellow with us, he advances a project entitled 'Religious Transfer and Cultural Diversity in Medieval and Early Modern Iberia and Beyond.'
