Käte Hamburger Kolleg

Thomas Hauschild is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. He was full professor of cultural/social anthropology at the Eberhard-Karls-University at Tübingen, and he served as a visiting professor at the universities of Hamburg, Aix-en-Provence, Princeton, Rome and Heidelberg. Hauschild was awarded fellowships at the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) located in Weimar (winter 2010/11), the Wissenschaftskolleg (WIKO, Institute for Advanced Study) at Berlin (2006-2008), the Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften (IFK) at Vienna (winter 2004/05). He also served as a research-director in the special research unit 511 “Literature and Anthropology” (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and in the Center of Excellence “Cultural Foundations of Integration”, both at the University of Konstanz.

Thomas Hauschild’s main research areas are the social and cultural anthropology of Catholicism; religion, politics, and their relations with the geography of the Mediterranean and of Europe; anthropological exhibitions (the art of flying, Berlin, 2011); historical approaches in anthropology, including world history and the evolutionary theory of culture; the history of anthropology, especially anthropology and fascism. During his time in Bochum he will investigate the interchange of Western Christmas practices with East Asian religions, focusing on the interchanges between the cult of Santa Claus in the West and the cults of the Mongolian clan-god “White Old Man” and of the Chinese-daoist star-god of longevity, Shou Xing.
