Jan Bremmer studied Classics and Spanish at the Free University Amsterdam (1962-1970) and Bristol University (1969-1970). He then gained a Ph.D. with his dissertation The Early Greek Conception of the Soul at Free University Amsterdam in 1979. He was an assistant professor (1974-1978) and associate professor (1978-1990) of ancient history at Utrecht University. At the University of Groningen, he was appointed to the Chair of Religious Studies in 1990 and hold twice times the post of Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (1996-2000 and 2001-2005).

His research covers Greek, Roman, Early Christian, and contemporary religion, social history and history of scholarship. He was a fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies (Washington D.C, 1980-1981), Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, 2000), Canterbury (Christchurch/NZ,2002), Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (USA, 2008), Internationales Kolleg Morphomata (Cologne, 2010-2011), Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (NewYork, 2012-2013), and Max Weber Kolleg (Erfurt, 2013-2014, 2016). He was the Inaugural Getty Villa Professor (Malibu, 2006-2007), as well as Leventis Professor (Edinburgh, 2007). Additionally he was Gastprofessor at the Münchner Zentrum für Antike Welten (Munich, 2011-2012), and the Collaborative Research Center/Sonderforschungsbereich 948 (Freiburg/Br, 2014).

He is a renowned author and editor of numerous books on wide topics, with translations into Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, Romanian, German and Chinese. Currently in preparation are Guided Tours of Hell (New Haven, forthcoming) and the first volume of his collected essays Maidens, Magic and Martyrs in Early Christianity (Tübingen, forthcoming).
