In 2001 Christoph Auffarth has been appointed Full Professor of Christian History and Theology at the University of Bremen's Department of Comparative Religion. Prior to that he was Assistant Professor at Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen, and held visiting professorships at the Universities of Tübingen, Basel, Bern and Göttingen. In addition he was DAAD Visiting Professor at Dormitio Abbey in Jerusalem in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Since 2004 Christoph Auffarth is chief editor of the journal Zeitschrift für Religionswissenschaft and co-editor of the academic series Religionen in der pluralen Welt.

Christoph Auffarth’s major research focuses are ancient Greek and Roman religions, the history of medieval European religions, and the history of science and religion in the 20th century. The central theme of his works are the plurality and interactional dynamics of different religions or intra-religious factions. During his time in Bochum he will investigate the religion of Third Reich and its underlying processes of selection and reception within the framework of the transformation of religion towards an innerworldly eschatology from the 19th to the 20th century.
