Ch'an Buddhism is often considered a synthesis of Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism. A survey of the pertaining literature and an exemplary look into a few translations of source texts will serve as a starting point for the discussion of an exemplary case of interactions between different strands of traditions, and the usefulness of the notion of schemata in analyzing the underlying processes.
